We've come a long way from writing letters to typing them, from mailing to e-mailing, from in-person meetings to video conferences, and as digitization spreads to almost every aspect of life, it was only a matter of time before it reached the world of art.

To create a painting, you no longer need to buy and replace paintbrushes, oil paints, or even papers. You can now paint, sketch, and doodle on your phone, tablet, or computer, and even do digital painting! You might be surprised to learn that the first example of digital art was created by John Whitney, dubbed the "Father of Computer Graphics," in the 1960s. He pioneered one of the most popular forms of art in the world by creating the world's first digital art pieces using mathematical functions. You do not, however, need to be a mathematician to create digital art today.

Digital art has been around for a while and can be found in games, animations, films, posters, graphic novels, and even photo editing. The most significant benefit of digital painting is that it is less messy than traditional painting. It's less difficult to correct your errors. It allows you to work more freely and create new variations of your art pieces in a much faster and less messy manner than the traditional method.

The Requirements

To get started with digital painting, you'll need two things:

  1. Hardware
  2. Software

With just your smartphone, you can begin digital painting. There are numerous free and paid apps available that will make this possible. However, the size and resolution of your painting will be limited by the screen size of your smartphone. These paintings are best for online viewing, such as on social media, or for printing for smaller real-world applications, such as stickers. If you want to create digital art for films or games, you'll need a more powerful computer and professional art software.

You'll need a higher-end computer, laptop, or tablet with a higher-end graphics card and high-speed SSDs if you want to make concept art for games and films like environment and/or character design. In addition, you'll need at least 8GB of RAM to render your strokes and mark-making effects. Add to that a well-designed display. For digital art, a 27-inch display is considered the "sweet spot." A graphic tablet that you can connect to your computer is also required. Pen tablets and pen displays are the two types available.

The stylus on the tablet is traced to your monitor display by Pen Tablets. A display monitor is included with Pen Displays, allowing you to draw directly on the screen. Pen Displays may appear to be more intuitive, but they are also more expensive. You'll also need a good stylus that can handle pressure. The pressure with which you paint with your brush matters a lot in art, and the same is true here. Students in digital art classes are taught how to use the stylus properly.

There are a variety of software options that may appeal to a variety of use cases. Adobe Suite is unquestionably the best. While it's pricey, it's also the industry standard, with a vast array of features and options. Procreate, Krita, Clip Studio Paint, and other less expensive, free, and open-source software are examples.

Connect the dots and Innovate! Try! Experiment! Sample!

It's time to get started now that the hardware and software have been set up. To begin, practice drawing simple shapes like circles and squares repeatedly while maintaining the same size and distance between them. It will assist you in becoming accustomed to working with the stylus while also allowing you to control the pressure sensitivity of the pen. You can experiment as much as you want because you don't have to worry about wasting materials. Experiment with colors, blend modes, brush variants, and layers to see what you can come up with.

You can also enrol in digital art classes to get your career off on the right foot. Art courses for film and game concept design are very popular among the art courses available.

It can be divided into two categories: environment design and character design. Both courses have their own set of requirements and approaches. Where Environment Design focuses on "believability" and a sense of familiarity, as well as lighting, style, composition, and visual cues.

Character design will force you to dig deep by elucidating a character's essence through the development of a character.

While portraying their attire, pose, and personality, I wanted to capture their attitude and make them real and grounded.

The most important thing is to continue experimenting until you figure out which path you want to take. Whether you prefer to create scenes or emotions.
